Matawan

The Borough of Matawan is situated on a 2.4 square mile area just a mile or so down river from Keyport Harbor in the Raritan Bay.  It is only 11 miles from the Jersey Shore, and less than an hour commute to Midtown Manhattan.

Matawan is known for its heavily-used train station at Aberdeen-Matawan on New Jersey Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line.  It attracts riders from all over western Monmouth County and provides service to New York City’s Penn Station.  NJ Transit also provides bus service to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. The Garden State Parkway also passes through the northern end of the borough.

As you can see from the ‘Welcome to Matawan-Aberdeen’ video, Matawan is a charming community that has retained and restored much of its historic buildings and celebratory heritage.

The Henry Hudson Trail runs through Matawan.  The 24-mile-long, 10-foot-wide paved multi-use trail is part of the Monmouth County Park System. The rail trail traverses the Raritan Bayshore and connects inland to Freehold Borough using the former rights of way of several rail lines. Although trees line much of the trail, it affords some views of surrounding wetlands, streams, woodlands and fields.

Matawan is part of the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District together with the neighboring community of Aberdeen Township.
